1st Quarter:

USC kicks off to start the season at the Coliseum.

San Jose State wants to control the clock early and starts with a 7-yard quick slant to WR Danny Scudero.

After a couple of first downs, USC's defensive front with Anthony Lucas and Kamari Ramsey stuffs the run and forces SJSU to punt.

USC takes over at their 28-yard line. Jayden Maiava leads the Trojans down the field quite easily with a nice mix of tempo and play-action passing.

After stalling on the SJSU 18-yard line, USC kicks a 35-yard field-goal.

After exchanging punts, USC gets the offense rolling.

With 3:15 left in the quarter, Maiava connects with Makai Lemon on a 38-yard, play-action post route for a TD down the middle of the field.

2nd Quarter:

San Jose State's offense starts to find a rhythm now that the nerves have settled.

Walker Eget escapes for two completions of more than 15 yards on their first drive of the quarter to Leland Smith and Kyri Shoels.

After starting from their 22 yard line, the Spartans have 1st and goal at the 9 yard line. Eget fakes a handoff to Floyd Chalk IV, rolls to his left, and finds Jackson Canaan in the back of the endzone, cutting the lead to 10-7 with 11:22 left in the quarter.

USC's offense starts to feel some pressure as they are stopped for a 3 and out after a holding penalty.

San Jose State begins to gain more confidence, and Walker Eget finds Danny Scudero along the sidelines for a 44-yard gain. The drive stalls and the Spartans settle for a 26-yard FG to tie it up.

The Trojans jump right back into the game after a 62-yard kickoff return by King Miller is followed by a 21-yard wheel route to Quinten Joyner for a touchdown.

The defenses stand their ground the rest of the half as USC takes a 7-point lead into the locker room.

Halftime: USC 17 - San Jose State 10

3rd Quarter:

San Jose State begins the half with a steady diet of Floyd Chalk IV. After grinding the ball down the field for 51 yards on 10 plays, the Spartans are held short on a 3rd and 6 from USC's 24 yard line. The Spartans settle for a FG, but not before slicing 5:47 off the clock.

Down 17-13, USC's offense kicks into gear and marches down the field without much resistance from SJSU's defense. The Trojans seem to be in good shape with a first down at the Spartans' 28 yard line.

The tide changes as SJSU's Jordan Pollard forces Jayden Maiava to attempt an errant throw, causing a tipped pass which the Spartans intercept at their 12-yard line.

San Jose State does not waste time and scores on a Walker Eget 18-yard scramble to cap a 5-play, 88-yard drive, giving them their first lead.

USC ends the quarter with a 42-yard FG and trail by 3.

End of 3rd: San Jose State 20 - USC 20

4th Quarter :

After bending but not breaking throughout most of the game, USC's defense turns up the heat.

The Spartans are caught off guard by a corner-blitz as Walker Eget rifles a pass into the waiting arms of USC CB Marcelles Williams at the SJSU 38-yard line.

USC is re-energized.

The Trojans up-tempo style, as it has all season in practice, is taking a toll on its opponent. Jayden Maiava works the ball down the field with a series of RPO and misdirection plays. The 38-yard drive is capped off with a 9-yard TD run up the middle by Waymond Jordan.

Walker Eget leads SJSU down the field but is sacked on 3rd and 8 by USC's Braylan Shelby, forcing a punt with 7:12 left in the game.

Maiava answers with a TD drive of his own as he finds Ja'Kobi Lane in the corner of the endzone on a fade for 24 yards.

After holding San Jose State to a 3 and out, USC receives the ball at their 41-yard line up 34-20 with 3:45 left in the game.

Jayden Maiava and Quinten Joyner perform admirably as the Trojans look to run out the clock. Joyner finds the edge one last time for a 12-yard TD run to put USC at 41-20 with 0:48 left on the clock.

**Summary:**

USC's depth and speed finally wore down San Jose State in an entertaining opener. Despite leading late in the 3rd quarter, the Spartans couldn't handle the Trojans' 4th quarter surge. Lincoln Riley's offense was inconsistent early but the defense was the difference in the game when it forced two crucial turnovers.
